3D Printed Lamps

The geometric patterns depict the infinite plane of possibilities, within which lies Cumilab - which tries to explore these possibilities to deeper understandings. The pattern was studied, recreated, and developed through computational tools. By controlling parameters such as cell size, density, thickness, scale, and distribution, multiple variations of the Voronoi-inspired lamps were explored across different shapes, sizes, and forms. This allowed the design process to move beyond a single object and instead create a flexible system for generating a family of lamps. Each iteration could carry the same design language while responding differently in terms of light diffusion, shadow intensity, and visual character.

The lamp is composed of three key parts. The outer shell forms the primary visual identity of the piece. Its intricate Voronoi-patterned structure, developed in two unique design variations, acts as a casing that filters light and casts mesmerising patterns. The central core is a clear cylindrical module that houses the lighting mechanism. It is designed to support optimal diffusion and brilliance, while a precision-crafted ring ensures that the components align correctly and remain structurally stable. The base cap completes the assembly, featuring a secure twist-lock mechanism that allows easy access for light replacement and assembly.

3D printing enables the complexity of the Voronoi pattern to be realised with precision. It allows the lamp to be fabricated as a detailed, lightweight, and customisable object, where intricate geometry can be translated directly from digital model to physical form. This process supports experimentation with form, porosity, and scale, making it possible to test how small changes in the pattern affect the quality of light.
