Kinetic Hanging Sculpture

The concept evolved into a sculpture composed of numerous weighted blocks, each contributing to the overall motion of the system. As multiple sine waves interacted, they generated a continuously shifting waveform that could be translated into a physical form. The changing peaks, troughs, and intersections of the waves informed the geometry of the sculpture, allowing movement itself to become a tool for form generation. The result was a kinetic structure that combined motion, pattern, and form into a dynamic and visually engaging spatial experience.

The exploration investigated the intersection of two waveforms to generate a square kinetic module. Rather than relying on movement along a single axis, the system combined two perpendicular wave motions, creating a more complex and dynamic three-dimensional transformation. The module was composed of a grid of weighted blocks suspended within a frame. As the two waveforms interacted, the blocks moved vertically to form shifting peaks, troughs, and gradients across the surface. This interaction transformed a simple square grid into a continuously evolving physical form, demonstrating how the intersection of wave patterns can be translated into a dynamic kinetic sculpture.

Building upon the square module, the exploration investigated the interaction of three waveforms within a hexagonal configuration. Introducing a third axis of movement created a more complex set of relationships between the waves, resulting in richer patterns of motion and a more dynamic three dimensional form. The module was composed of hexagonal weighted blocks suspended within a kinetic framework. As the three waveforms intersected, the blocks moved vertically to generate continuously shifting peaks, troughs, and areas of convergence across the surface. The interaction of these wave patterns transformed a simple hexagonal grid into an evolving physical landscape, demonstrating how increasing the number of wave interactions can produce more intricate kinetic forms and spatial experiences.

To test the concept at a physical scale, a scaled working prototype based on the square module was developed. The individual weighted blocks were 3D printed and filled with sand to increase their mass, ensuring smoother and more stable movement. The supporting framework was designed as a two-layer system, with independent wheel mechanisms operating along the X and Y axes. The interaction of these motions generated the two waveforms, while strings connected to the weighted blocks translated the movement into vertical displacement along the Z-axis. The prototype demonstrated how intersecting wave patterns could be translated into a dynamic three-dimensional kinetic form.
