The project begins by identifying these underused spaces as opportunities rather than leftover zones. Beneath metro corridors lie continuous stretches of shaded, accessible land that can be reimagined as vibrant public realms. With thoughtful design interventions, these spaces can support community activity, local commerce, pedestrian movement, environmental improvement, and neighbourhood-level engagement.

Urban Treescape proposes to transform such neglected voids into green, multifunctional, and low-carbon environments that contribute positively to both city life and ecological balance.

Kiri (Paulownia) is proposed as a key planting species for transforming the underutilised spaces beneath elevated metro infrastructure into greener, cooler, and more welcoming urban environments. Known for its rapid growth and broad leaves, the tree can provide shade, soften the hard infrastructure, and contribute to improving the microclimate beneath the metro. Its potential for carbon dioxide absorption and its substantial canopy make it a promising element in the project’s ecological strategy. Beyond its environmental role, Urban Treescape integrates tree planting, shaded pedestrian pathways, seating, lighting, and public amenities to create more comfortable and accessible spaces. The planting layout combines Kiri trees with lower vegetation to establish a continuous green buffer, helping reduce direct solar exposure and visually separating pedestrian areas from vehicular movement.

The project also explores the potential of these spaces as community-oriented and economically active hubs. Organised kiosks, vending zones, and gathering spaces can support local commerce while maintaining clear circulation and safe public access. By combining the ecological benefits of Kiri with carefully planned public amenities, Urban Treescape reimagines the neglected underside of metro infrastructure as a productive urban landscape that supports environmental improvement, social interaction, and local livelihoods.
